The 2011 Referendum

28 May 2011

On Election Day, 26 November 2011, New Zealand voters will be asked to vote in a referendum on our electoral system. This is the referendum voting paper.

You will be asked two questions:
1. Do you want to keep MMP, or change to another voting system?
2. Which of the four alternative voting systems you would prefer if New Zealand decided to change from MMP?

The four alternative systems are:

•    First Past the Post (FPP)
•    Preferential Vote (PV)
•    Supplementary Member (SM)
•    Single Transferable Vote (STV).

The referendum process and options

The Ministry of Justice has information about the referendum, how it was set up, and the alternative voting systems.
