MMP referendum results on December 10

30 November 2011

Despite results of the election being known on the night, MMP referendum results won't be confirmed until 2pm on December 10th.

This is because the priority for the Electoral Commission is the election results, so parties can start the process of forming the new government.

The results of people who voted in advance of November 26 were released on the night though, representing about 10 per cent of votes overall.

Why I support MMP: Anton Oliver

• I like how clear MMP is – a party’s share of the vote is roughly the same as its share of the seats in Parliament. A party that gets a quarter of the votes gets a quarter of the seats.

• We are used to MMP. It is working well and has produced stable governments.

• I think we can tweak MMP. Following the referendum there will be an independent review of MMP – we can make it even better.

10 weeks to go the referendum. (Well nearly 9, as of Monday). Can you spare a tenner for the home straight?

Your help is needed to keep a fair voting system this November.

Since last year, we have been working hard to make sure everyone is aware of how important it is to keep MMP.

To run an effective campaign across New Zealand doesn't happen for free.  We're very reliant on the support of people like you.

The local Wellington Campaign for MMP group was launched yesterday with the celebratory unveiling of the first billboard in a Wellington garden.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown was in attendance explaining why she's supporting MMP in the upcoming referendum, and she joined the residents who had hammered the first billboard and enjoyed some celebratory MMP cake.
